Product Name
Medium-Sized Steel Channels (Medium C-Sections / Medium U-Channels)
Introduction
Medium-sized steel channels are C- or U-shaped structural sections sized between light duty and heavy girder classes. They offer a balanced combination of load capacity, stiffness and economy for medium-span building frames, equipment supports, secondary girders, walkway stringers and light bridge/industrial uses. Available as rolled mill sections or shop-fabricated plate channels, they are practical where good bending resistance and easy bolting/welding are required without the cost/weight of large plate girders.
Typical Materials & Grades
Carbon / structural steels: S235 / Q235, S275, S355 (EN); A36, A572 Gr.50 (ASTM).
HSLA options: S420 / S460 for higher yield strength or reduced weight designs.
Weathering / marine variants: Corten (for atmospheric corrosion resistance) or AH36/DH36 for marine/bridge use.
Finish options: mill black, shot-blast + primer, hot-dip galvanize, painted / epoxy topcoat or duplex systems.
Typical Dimensions & Ranges
Depth (h): 120 mm – 400 mm (medium range).
Flange width (b): 40 mm – 150 mm.
Web thickness (tw): 4 mm – 16 mm.
Flange thickness (tf): 6 mm – 25 mm.
Weight per metre: approximately 10 kg/m → 120 kg/m depending on section geometry.
Lengths: standard mill lengths (6 m, 12 m) or cut-to-length; spliced for longer spans.
Mass per metre (general formula):
mass (kg/m) = [2 × (b × tf) + (h − 2 × tf) × tw] × 0.00785
Example: h = 200 mm, b = 75 mm, tf = 10 mm, tw = 8 mm → area = 2×(75×10)+(200−20)×8 = 1500 + 1440 = 2940 mm² → mass ≈ 2940×0.00785 ≈ 23.1 kg/m.
Key Features & Advantages
Good bending & shear performance for medium spans and concentrated loads.
Economical & readily available: many standard medium channel sizes are stocked by mills.
Easy to connect: flat flange faces simplify bolting, welding and bracket attachment.
Fabrication flexibility: can be supplied rolled or as built-up plate channels for non-standard sizes.
Prefabrication friendly: match-drilled holes, copes, stiffeners and welded attachments reduce site work.
Corrosion protection options to suit environment and life-cycle requirements.
Typical Applications
Secondary beams, purlins and girts in commercial & industrial buildings.
Equipment bases, machine frames and conveyor supports.
Walkway stringers, ladder rails and platform framing.
Small/medium bridge secondary members and parapet supports.
Crane runway secondary members (light/medium duty) and gantry subframes.
Structural stiffeners, edge rails and splice members.
Fabrication & Value-Added Services
Cutting & coping: CNC plasma/laser cutting for precise copes and splice faces.
Pre-drilling / match-drilling: bolt hole patterns for rapid field assembly.
Welded stiffeners & doublers: local reinforcement around openings or concentrated loads.
Pre-assembly / splice kits: numbered packs (splice plates, bolts, washers) for fast erection.
Cambering & straightening: factory camber where required to offset service deflection.
Surface systems: shot-blast + primer, hot-dip galvanize, two-pack epoxy/PU or duplex coatings.
Quality Assurance & Testing
Material certification: Mill Test Certificates (MTC) with heat-number traceability.
Welding & fabrication controls: WPS/PQR governed welding, welder qualifications and weld records for built-up sections.
NDT: MT/UT/RT available for critical welds or as specified.
Dimensional inspection: section geometry, hole position tolerance and straightness/camber checks.
Coating inspection: blast profile, coating thickness and adhesion testing per spec.
Packaging, Transport & Site Support
Bundling: strapped bundles with timber/polymer spacers; end guards for coated pieces.
Marking: part IDs, orientation and splice numbers for site sequencing.
Transport: single-piece lengths sized to transport/crane limits; spliced packs for long spans.
Site assistance: lifting drawings, match-drill jigs, erection sequencing and optional on-site supervision.
