Forged Round Steel

Forged Round Steel

Forged Round Steel are solid, cylindric steel blanks produced by forging (open-die, closed-die, upsetting or rotary forging) from billets or ingots. Forging refines the metal’s grain structure and removes internal defects, delivering superior mechanical properties — strength, toughness and fatigue resistance — compared with as-rolled bar of the same chemistry. Forged rounds are used as blanks for critical shafts, pins, hubs, rollers, crankshafts, coupling components and large fasteners.

Forged Round Steel (Forged Solid Rounds / Forged Bar Stock)

Introduction

Forged Round Steel are solid, cylindric steel blanks produced by forging (open-die, closed-die, upsetting or rotary forging) from billets or ingots. Forging refines the metal's grain structure and removes internal defects, delivering superior mechanical properties - strength, toughness and fatigue resistance - compared with as-rolled bar of the same chemistry. Forged rounds are used as blanks for critical shafts, pins, hubs, rollers, crankshafts, coupling components and large fasteners.

Typical Specifications

Materials / Grades: Carbon steels (e.g., C45 / 1045), medium-alloy (4140 / 42CrMo, 4142), low-alloy structural (S355/S420), stainless (304/316, 17-4PH), tool & bearing steels on request.

Manufacture: Open-die forging, closed-die forging, upset forging, rotary forging, followed by trimming, normalizing or controlled cooling. Optional heat treatments: anneal, normalize, quench & temper, case hardening, stress relief.

Diameter range (finished/rough): Ø20 mm → Ø1200 mm (typical - larger on request via forging/forging+machining).

Length: Cut-to-length per drawing; common stock lengths 1–6 m (or single-piece limited by transport).

Tolerances: As-forged tolerances depend on process; typical oversize allowances: +2–10 mm on diameters. Finished/turned tolerances: ±0.01–0.5 mm depending on grinding/turning class.

Surface finish: Forged scale (as-forged), peeled & oiled, turned, rough-turned, precision ground or polished; protective oil/VCI for shipment.

Mechanical properties: Strongly dependent on grade & heat treatment - e.g., quenched & tempered 4140: yield ~700 MPa+, tensile ~900 MPa+; C45 normalized: yield ~350 MPa, tensile ~600 MPa. Provide target properties for quotation.

Key Features & Benefits

Improved grain flow & integrity: Forging aligns grain lines following part geometry, improving directional strength and fatigue life.

Higher strength & toughness: Forged parts tolerate impact and dynamic loading better than cast or rolled equivalents.

Low internal defects: Forging reduces porosity and segregation, enhancing reliability for critical components.

Dimensional economy for downstream machining: Forged rounds require less material removal than cast billets, lowering scrap and machining time.

Broad material & size flexibility: Can produce small to very large blanks and support a wide alloy spectrum and heat-treatment schedules.

Typical Applications

Heavy shafts, axles and spindles (mining, marine, power generation).

Crankshafts, connecting rods and coupling hubs.

Large pins, clevises, shear bolts and pivot components.

Rolls, cams, bearing journals and gear blanks.

Forged flanges, rings and structural connector blanks for offshore & bridge hardware.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Traceability: Full Mill Test Certificate (MTC) and forging-route documentation (heat number → forging → finish).

Mechanical tests: Tensile, yield, elongation, hardness and, where required, impact (Charpy) tests per applicable standard.

Non-destructive testing: Ultrasonic (UT), magnetic particle (MT) and dye-penetrant (PT) available for critical deliveries.

Metallurgical checks: Macro/microstructure and grain flow verification on request.

Dimensional inspection: Gauging reports and finishing-tolerance certificates for ground/turned deliveries.

Value-Added Services

Rough- and finish-machining (turning, boring, grinding) to specified tolerances.

Heat treatment & tempering with certified treatment records.

Surface treatments: shot-peening, nitriding, induction hardening, phosphate, galvanizing or coatings.

CNC machining to final part dimensions, drilling, keyways, splines, threads and balancing.

Third-party inspection and certification (classification societies, TÜV, Lloyd's, etc.).

Packaging & Delivery

Protected with VCI film or light oil, plastic end-caps for precision ground ends.

Bundled on wooden skids or cradles for long bars; single heavy blanks crated or cradled with lifting points labeled.

Marked with heat number, material grade and PO/part number.

Lead times depend on size, grade and heat-treatment: typical stock/standard grades 2–6 weeks; custom forgings or heavy/heat-treated items 4–12+ weeks.

Ordering Information - What We Need

Please provide: required diameter × length, material grade, supply condition (as-forged / normalized / quenched & tempered / ground), final tolerances/finish, required mechanical properties / heat treatment, any NDT/testing or certification needed, and quantity. For part-forgings, supply drawings (2D/3D), target weight, and critical dimensions - we will produce a forging plan, estimated yield, and a quotation.

Why Choose Our Forged Round Steel?

We combine in-house forging capability, controlled heat-treatment and precision finishing lines with full metallurgical traceability. That delivers forged blanks and finished bars optimized for performance, minimal machining waste and reliable service in heavy-duty, safety-critical applications. Send your specs or drawing and we'll return a forging proposal, material recommendation and lead-time estimate.
