Large Section Steel Angle Steel

Large Section Steel Angle Steel

Large-Section Angle Steel are heavy, wide-leg L-sections manufactured or fabricated for primary structural use where high load capacity, large connection areas and enhanced stability are required. Compared with standard angles, these large-section angles feature greater leg widths, thicker sections and often bespoke geometries—used as primary braces, stiffeners, column stiffeners, portal frame members, gantry supports and heavy fabrications in bridges, offshore platforms, industrial plants and large steel structures.

Large-Section Angle Steel (Heavy-Duty L-Section)

Introduction

Large-Section Angle Steel are heavy, wide-leg L-sections manufactured or fabricated for primary structural use where high load capacity, large connection areas and enhanced stability are required. Compared with standard angles, these large-section angles feature greater leg widths, thicker sections and often bespoke geometries-used as primary braces, stiffeners, column stiffeners, portal frame members, gantry supports and heavy fabrications in bridges, offshore platforms, industrial plants and large steel structures.

Typical Specifications

Section Type: Equal-leg and unequal-leg heavy angles (L a × b × t) - standard and custom profiles.

Typical Dimensions (examples): leg widths 150 – 600 mm, thickness 10 – 100 mm (custom sizes beyond range available).

Length: Standard mill/prefab lengths 6 m / 12 m; cut-to-length, cambered or spliced for longer runs.

Materials / Grades: S355 / S420 / S460 (EN); ASTM A572 Gr.50 / A992; AH36 / DH36 for marine/offshore; weathering steels and stainless on request.

Mass per Metre: ~20 – 600 kg/m depending on geometry and thickness.

Manufacture: Hot-rolled (where available), heavy plate bent & welded (fabricated), or flame/plasma cut & welded built-up angles for very large sizes.

Surface Finish: Mill, shot-blast + primer, hot-dip galvanize, epoxy/PU coating, or intumescent fireproof coatings.

Features & Advantages

High Local Bearing Area: Wide legs provide generous flange width for bolted connections, baseplates and gusset welding.

Enhanced Bending & Buckling Resistance: Thick legs and stiffening options increase resistance to local and global buckling under heavy compressive or bending loads.

Versatile Fabrication: Can be supplied as single heavy angles or assembled into back-to-back, T- or boxed members for increased section properties.

Cost-Effective for Strengthening: Efficient solution for retrofits, stiffening of columns, or where plate girders are unnecessary.

Durable in Harsh Environments: Available in weathering grades or with protective coatings for long service life outdoors and offshore.

Typical Applications

Primary bracing and stiffeners in large building frames and industrial halls.

Gantry and crane leg gussets, cantilever supports and load-bearing brackets.

Bridge stiffener plates, truss joints and approach structures.

Offshore platform braces, jacket member reinforcements and deck supports.

Heavy equipment foundations, base plates and transfer girders.

Retrofit strengthening and connection plates in structural rehabilitation.

Fabrication & Value-Added Services

Built-up Assemblies: Back-to-back, welded T-sections or box assemblies to achieve higher section modulus.

Cutting & Machining: CNC plasma/laser cutting, coping, notch & end-preparations.

Pre-drilling & Match-Drilling: Bolt hole patterns, slotted holes and pre-drilled splice kits for rapid erection.

Welded Attachments: Welded stiffeners, flange plates, lifting tabs and welded connection plates.

Coating & Finish: Shot-blast, primer, two-pack epoxy, hot-dip galvanize and intumescent systems per spec.

Pre-assembly & Kitting: Prefabricated frames, tagged splice packs and just-in-time delivery.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Material Traceability: Full Mill Test Certificates (MTC) and chemical analysis.

Welding Controls: WPS/PQR governed welding with qualified welders; critical welds subject to UT/RT and surface MT/PT as required.

Mechanical Testing: Tensile, yield and impact testing per specification where applicable.

Dimensional Inspection: Check of leg lengths, thickness, squareness and straightness; laser scanning for complex prefabs.

Coating Inspection: Film thickness, adhesion and salt-spray testing as specified.

Packaging & Delivery

Bundled with timber/polymer spacers, banded and labeled by size/heat number.

End and corner protection for painted or galvanized finishes.

Crated or skidded for export shipments; custom braces for long or heavy single pieces.

Lifting/rigging drawings, splice kits and on-site handling instructions included.

Lead time: typically 4–10 weeks depending on size, fabrication and finishing scope.

Ordering Information - What We Need

Please provide: desired leg dimensions (a × b × t) or drawing, material grade, length(s), connection/bolt patterns, finish/coating requirement, expected loads or service conditions, transport/crane limits at site, quantity and delivery schedule. For structural use, include design loads and intended connection details so we can verify adequacy or propose optimized built-up options.
