Window Frame Steel (Steel Window Profiles & Frames)

Introduction

Window Frame Steel are precision-formed steel members and complete frame assemblies engineered for windows, curtain walls, storefronts and glazed façades. Compared with aluminum, steel window frames offer higher stiffness in slimmer sections, excellent security, and superior long-term dimensional stability. Frames can be supplied as raw profiles for fabricators or as fully assembled, glazed and finished units ready for installation.

Typical Specifications

Materials: Cold-rolled mild steel (DX51D/SGCC), hot-rolled structural steel (S235/S275/S355), stainless steel (304/316) for corrosive environments.

Manufacture: Roll-forming, press-brake bending, welding (MIG/TIG), CNC punching and laser cutting. Hollow tubular, C-section, Z-section, and bespoke extrusion-like profiles available.

Profile Sizes: Custom; typical leg widths 20–120 mm, depth 20–200 mm. Glazing rebate depths commonly 8–35 mm.

Wall Thickness: 0.9 – 3.0 mm (cold-rolled profiles) up to 6 mm for heavy security frames.

Finish Options: Hot-dip galvanize (EN ISO 1461), electrogalvanize (ASTM A653), polyester powder coat (RAL colors), PVDF, shop primer + topcoat, stainless bright/brush finish.

Thermal Performance: Thermal break / insulating strips and gasket systems available to achieve U-values required for energy codes.

Glazing: Single, double or triple glazed units; glazing beads, EPDM/PVC gaskets, and silicone/structural sealant options.

Hardware: Prepped for hinges, locks, friction stays, multipoint locks, and drainage outlets; compatible with common hardware systems.

Standards & Tests: Dimensional tolerances per customer drawing; optional air/water/wind performance tests to EN 12152 / EN 12207 / EN 12208 or ASTM standards; salt-spray and adhesion tests for coatings.

Features & Advantages

Slim Sightlines & High Strength: Steel's higher modulus allows narrower visible frames for maximum glass area while meeting structural loads.

Security: Heavy-gauge and welded construction improve burglary resistance compared with lightweight profiles.

Durability & Longevity: Galvanized + powder coat finishes and stainless options give long service life in exterior exposures.

Thermal & Acoustic Options: Thermal break systems and appropriate glazing improve energy performance and sound insulation.

Precision Fabrication: CNC punching, corner welding and weather-drain detailing enable tight tolerances and reliable sealing.

Aesthetic Flexibility: Factory finishes, custom colors and decorative profiles suit heritage restoration or contemporary design.

Typical Applications

Residential and high-end residential windows and doors.

Commercial curtain walls, storefronts and glazed façades.

Heritage restoration requiring steel sections to match original profiles.

Security windows, prison and institutional glazing with heavy duty frames.

Industrial windows for factories, workshops and warehouses.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Material Traceability: Mill certificates (MTC) and chemical/mechanical test reports available on request.

Dimensional & Visual Inspection: Profile geometry, weld integrity and finish quality checks.

Performance Testing (optional): Air permeability, water tightness and wind load testing to EN/ASTM; acoustic/thermal testing for certified units.

Coating Verification: Salt spray, adhesion and thickness testing per ISO/ASTM methods.

Packaging & Delivery

Protection: Frames nested with edge protection, timber/steel crates for glazed units; desiccant and VCI film for export.

Labeling: Each unit tagged with project ID, size, finish and handling instructions.

Lead Time: Standard profiles and simple frames: 2–4 weeks; bespoke profiles, thermal break systems or fully glazed assemblies: 4–10 weeks depending on scope.
