Large Section Steel Flat Bar

Large Section Steel Flat Bar

Large-Section Steel Flat Bars are heavy, wide rectangular steel strips supplied as single solid bars for primary structural members, heavy fabrication, plate stiffeners, base plates, machine bases and heavy-duty connectors. Compared with standard flat bars, large-section flats offer greater cross-sectional area and stiffness for heavy loads while remaining simpler to machine, weld and bolt than fabricated built-up sections.

Large-Section Steel Flat Bar (Heavy Flat Bar / Wide Flat Strip)

Introduction

Large-Section Steel Flat Bars are heavy, wide rectangular steel strips supplied as single solid bars for primary structural members, heavy fabrication, plate stiffeners, base plates, machine bases and heavy-duty connectors. Compared with standard flat bars, large-section flats offer greater cross-sectional area and stiffness for heavy loads while remaining simpler to machine, weld and bolt than fabricated built-up sections.

Typical Specifications

Standards: EN 10025, ASTM A36 / A572, EN 10130 (cold-rolled strips), or customer specification.

Materials / Grades: Carbon / structural steels (S235, S275, S355), high-strength low-alloy (S420, A572 Gr.50), stainless (304/316) on request.

Widths (W): typically 100 – 800 mm (custom up to 1,200 mm).

Thicknesses (T): typically 10 – 150 mm (custom thicker on request).

Length: standard 6 m / 12 m; cut-to-length, single-piece lengths to site/transport limits; custom lengths available.

Mass per metre (approx.): use formula below to calculate for exact size.

Surface finish: mill finish, shot-blasted & primed, hot-dip galvanized, painted or machined/ground.

Tolerances: per customer/spec (cold-rolled or precision ground options for tighter tolerances).

Mass formula (steel):
mass (kg/m) = Width(mm) × Thickness(mm) × 0.00785
(0.00785 = steel density 7850 kg/m³ with unit conversion)

Sample weights (approx.):

100 mm × 10 mm → 100 × 10 × 0.00785 = 7.85 kg/m

150 mm × 12 mm → 150 × 12 × 0.00785 = 14.13 kg/m

200 mm × 20 mm → 200 × 20 × 0.00785 = 31.40 kg/m

300 mm × 50 mm → 300 × 50 × 0.00785 = 117.75 kg/m

500 mm ×100 mm → 500 ×100 × 0.00785 = 392.50 kg/m

Key Features & Advantages

High section area & stiffness: Large flat bars provide simple, economical solutions for bearing, gusset and splice plates without the need for complex fabrications.

Easy fabrication: Excellent for cutting, drilling, welding and machining; ideal for bolted connections and welded stiffeners.

Cost effective: Often more economical than building equivalent cross-sections from plates and welds for moderate production runs.

Surface & protective options: Can be supplied primed, painted, galvanized or machined to final tolerances for immediate installation.

Customizability: Available in bespoke widths, thicknesses, edge treatments (chamfer/round), and pre-drilled/hole-patterned per drawing.

Typical Applications

Base plates, anchor plates and gusset plates in heavy structures.

Machine bases, heavy frames, press beds and mounting plates.

Bridge bearings, stiffening plates and splice/connectors.

Shipbuilding fittings, dock/wharf plates and heavy fabrication parts.

Structural retrofits and reinforcement plates.

Fabrication & Value-Added Services

Cut-to-length, beveling and CNC profiling (holes, slots, notches).

Drilling, countersinking and match-drilling for bolted splice kits.

Machining/planing and precision grinding to thickness tolerances.

Welding of pre-attached brackets, stiffeners or lift lugs; stress-relief/heat treatment where required.

Coating: shot-blast + primer, epoxy/PU coatings, hot-dip galvanizing, or bespoke painting systems.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Mill Test Certificates (MTC) provided with chemical and mechanical test results.

Dimensional checks (width, thickness, straightness) and surface inspection.

Mechanical testing (tensile, yield, hardness) per order.

NDT (UT/MT/RT) available for critical plates or built-up items.

Traceability from melt to finished product available on request.

Packaging & Delivery

Bundles strapped on timber skids with polymer spacers to avoid surface damage.

End protection (plastic/steel caps) and VCI or shrink-wrap for export.

Heavy pieces crated or skidded; long or very wide bars shipped per transport/route constraints.

Lead time: stock sizes 3–10 days; custom widths/thicknesses, machining or coatings 2–8 weeks depending on scope.

Ordering Information - What We Need

Please provide: desired width × thickness × length, material grade, surface finish, tolerance class, quantity, and any value-added processing (cutting, holes, machining, coatings). If the flat bar is serving a structural role, include loads, connection details and lifting/transport limits so we can advise on single-piece vs spliced supply.
