Large Section Steel Hexagonal Steel

Large Section Steel Hexagonal Steel

Large-Section Hexagonal Steel are heavy, six-sided solid bars (hex bars) or large hexagonal tubes used where a faceted profile, high section area and strong wrenching/fixturing faces are required. Supplied as hot-rolled, forged or precision-ground bars, these products serve as blanks for large fasteners, coupling hubs, heavy shafts with flats, forging feedstock and structural dowels. Available in carbon, alloy and stainless grades, large hex bars combine machinability, simple clamping/torque faces and excellent mechanical capacity.

Product Name

Large-Section Hexagonal Steel (Heavy Hex Bars / Hexagonal Blanks)

Introduction

Large-Section Hexagonal Steel are heavy, six-sided solid bars (hex bars) or large hexagonal tubes used where a faceted profile, high section area and strong wrenching/fixturing faces are required. Supplied as hot-rolled, forged or precision-ground bars, these products serve as blanks for large fasteners, coupling hubs, heavy shafts with flats, forging feedstock and structural dowels. Available in carbon, alloy and stainless grades, large hex bars combine machinability, simple clamping/torque faces and excellent mechanical capacity.

Typical Specifications

Forms: Solid hex bars (regular hexagon across-flats dimension), and large hexagonal hollow sections (tube) on request.

Materials / Grades: Carbon & medium-carbon (e.g., C45/1045), alloy steels (4140/42CrMo), structural/high-strength (S355, S420), stainless (304/316, duplex) and custom alloys.

Manufacture: Hot-rolled long bars, forged & straightened, cold-drawn or precision ground to size. Large blanks produced by forging or billet machining where required.

Across-flats dimension (D): 40 mm – 800 mm (typical); larger sizes possible by forging/machining.

Lengths: Standard mill lengths (3 m / 6 m / 12 m) or cut-to-length to customer requirement; single-piece lengths limited by transport/handling.

Tolerances: Hot-rolled ±0.5–3.0 mm; cold-drawn/ground ±0.01–0.3 mm depending on precision class.

Surface finish: Mill scale, peeled & oiled, turned, ground & polished, or coated with corrosion inhibitor.

Straightness: Typical ≤ 0.5–2.0 mm/m; tighter control available.

Mass / Weight Formula (solid regular hexagon)

Area (mm²) of a regular hexagon with across-flats D (mm):

A=338 D2 ≈ 0.649519 D2A = \frac{3\sqrt{3}}{8}\,D^{2}\ \approx\ 0.649519\,D^{2}A=833D2 ≈ 0.649519D2

Mass per metre (steel, ρ ≈ 7850 kg/m³):

mass (kg/m)≈0.00785×A≈0.0050987×D2\text{mass (kg/m)} \approx 0.00785 \times A \approx 0.0050987 \times D^{2}mass (kg/m)≈0.00785×A≈0.0050987×D2

Quick examples (across-flats D):

D = 50 mm → ≈ 12.75 kg/m

D = 100 mm → ≈ 50.99 kg/m

D = 200 mm → ≈ 203.95 kg/m

D = 300 mm → ≈ 458.89 kg/m

D = 400 mm → ≈ 815.80 kg/m

(Use the formula above to compute other sizes.)

Features & Advantages

Large wrenching/fixturing flats: Six equal faces simplify clamping, keying or torque application without further machining.

High section capacity: Large cross-section supports heavy axial, bending and torsional loads.

Forging & machining friendly: Excellent blank stock for large forgings, heavy shafts, pins and machining to final tolerances.

Heat-treatable: Can be delivered annealed, normalized, quenched & tempered or case-hardened per application needs.

Precision finishing: Ground or turned options deliver concentricity and surface finish suitable for bearing journals or tight assemblies.

Material versatility: From economical carbon grades to corrosion-resistant stainless and high-strength alloys.

Typical Applications

Large bolts, nuts and forged fastener blanks.

Heavy shafts, coupling hubs and large pins with hex flats.

Forging billets for large gears, crankshafts and connecting rods.

Structural dowels, anchor pins, and marine/offshore fittings.

Decorative/architectural solid posts where hex form is desired.

Machine tool spindles and heavy equipment components.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Material certification: Full Mill Test Certificate (MTC) with heat number and chemical analysis.

Mechanical testing: Tensile, yield, elongation and hardness tests as specified.

NDT: UT/MT/VT available for critical orders or forged components.

Dimensional control: Across-flats, straightness and runout inspection; gauge reports supplied on request.

Metallurgical checks: Macro/microstructure examinations and, if required, grain-size or inclusion rating.

Packaging & Delivery

Bundling: Timber-spaced bundles with corrosion-inhibitor film or VCI paper for export.

End protection: Wooden cradles and end caps for precision ground surfaces.

Handling: Lifting lugs or cradles provided for heavy single pieces; single-piece sizes planned to transport/crane limits.

Lead time: Stock/standard grades 2–6 weeks; forged, heat-treated or precision-ground items 4–12+ weeks depending on size and quantity.
