Product Name
Ship Flat Steel (Marine Flat Bar / Shipbuilding Flat Strip & Plate Strip)
Introduction
Ship Flat Steel are heavy-duty flat bars, strips or cut-to-width plate blanks manufactured for shipbuilding, offshore and marine applications. Specified for high strength, good weldability, precise flatness and long-term corrosion protection, these flats are used as bearing plates, stiffeners, splice/cover plates, deck strips, gusset flats and mounting plates where reliable contact surfaces, weldability and class-compliant material grades are required.
Typical Specifications
Forms: hot-rolled flat bar, cut-to-width plate strips, planed/ground flats, and precision-ground bearing flats.
Common materials / grades: AH36 / DH36 / EH36 (shipbuilding grades), A131, S355 / Q345, A709 or equivalent; stainless (304/316) and duplex steels for special applications.
Width (W): 20 mm – 1,200 mm (custom widths available).
Thickness (T): 4 mm – 150 mm (from thin tie strips to heavy cover plates).
Lengths: standard 3 m, 6 m, 12 m; single-piece to yard/transport limits or cut-to-length.
Tolerance & flatness: tighter flatness and thickness tolerances available (planed or ground) for bearing and grout contact faces.
Mass formula: mass (kg/m) = Width(mm) × Thickness(mm) × 0.00785.
Key Features & Advantages
Marine-grade metallurgy: selected steel grades with adequate toughness, weldability and fatigue performance for shipboard service.
Bearing-ready surfaces: planed/ground options ensure full-face contact for bearings, grout pads and deck supports.
Fatigue & weld detailing: edges and preparation can be supplied to minimize stress concentrations under cyclic loads.
Wide supply forms: from simple hot-rolled flats to precision-ground and machined plates ready for assembly.
Coating compatibility: suitable for shop-applied marine primer/epoxy systems, thermal zinc spray, or delivery for yard paint application.
Classification support: MTCs and material traceability to support ABS, DNV, Lloyd's or other class requirements.
Typical Shipboard Applications
Bearing and grout plates for deck supports and pedestals.
Splice / cover plates for plate girders and stringers.
Deck tie strips, weld-on stiffener strips and edge protection.
Mounting/base plates for machinery, winches and foundations.
Doublers and reinforcement strips around cutouts, hatches and openings.
Repair flats for onsite patching and retrofit work.
Fabrication & Value-Added Services
Cut-to-size & CNC profiling: accurate length cutting, CNC contouring and notch/cutout production.
Precision planing & grinding: flatness and thickness control for bearing faces and sealing surfaces.
CNC drilling & countersinking: bolt-hole patterns, slotting and countersinks to drawing.
Weld preparations: beveling, chamfering and tack-assembly for reduced yard welding time.
Heat treatment: stress-relief or specified heat-treatment cycles where required.
Surface preparation & coating: shot-blast to Sa2.5, primer/epoxy application, thermal zinc spray or delivery uncoated per yard schedule.
Kitting & pre-assembly: numbered packs and matched splice plates for rapid fit-up.
Quality Assurance & Testing
Material certificates: full Mill Test Certificates (MTC) and batch traceability to support class and owner requirements.
Mechanical & impact testing: tensile, yield and Charpy impact testing per class or project specification.
NDT: PT/MT/UT/RT available for critical assemblies or as required by classification.
Dimensional & flatness checks: gauge reports for width, thickness and face flatness for bearing plates.
Coating inspection: blast profile, coating thickness and adhesion testing for shop-applied marine systems.
Packaging, Transport & On-Site Support
Packaging: flat-stacked on timber skids with polymer spacers, strapped and protected from seawater/condensation.
Protection: VCI/oil for storage, crating for precision-ground plates, temporary corrosion inhibitors for export.
Marking: part ID, heat number, orientation and splice references clearly labeled.
Transport: planning for heavy/oversize loads and yard lifting limits; spliced deliveries with match-drilled splice kits where needed.
Site assistance: provision of erection drawings, bolt kits and optional on-site fit-up supervision.
